Hereford College of Technology, Straw Bale Cafe
Herefordshire College of Technology needed to replace its existing refectory with a larger and more aesthetically-pleasing facility within a restricted budget.
An innovative solution has been constructed: the design uses straw bale construction (providing a high level of insulation) within a timber frame. Some of the external walls were clad in timber supplied and cut by the College themselves, and the external wall facing the main road is a living green wall. This wall contains a substrate which allows either for direct pocket planting or for plants to be trailed up the wall.
A wind turbine and photovoltaic panels were included within the project to reduce the level of electricity used by the College.
The scheme successfully provides a sustainable Café which gives a good visual impression when approaching the College campus.
