Hopkins Building,
University of Reading

The new building forms part of a plan for the housing of new or restructured Schools of Science within the strategic development of the University of Reading's Science Zone.

The building provides one floor of generic teaching space and two floors of generic research space, (total 3,500m2) along with associated plant areas and enabling works, and has a physical link with the adjacent Food Biosciences Building. The building is intended to be adaptable, to encourage interaction, to make efficient use of space and to showcase the activities of the department and the University.

The building has a steel frame structure on piled foundations, with concrete floors. The exterior is curtain wall clad, with a steel clad plant room and single ply roofing. Internally, Category 2 laboratory facilities have been provided with high quality laboratory fittings, rubber flooring and metal plank ceilings. There is a considerable M&E servicing element.
