Huish Episcopi School, Langport, SomersetHuish Episcopi is a specialist, high performing Secondary School for Science, Languages and Applied Learning. The School received funding from the LSC to extend the current age range to 19 and to deliver a new Sixth Form extension offering Art and Exhibition space, a Study Centre, contemporary Café and a multi-functional Auditorium. The extension is in two buildings, both 2-storey and linked at first floor level by way of a covered walkway built from sustainable timber. The project also included an extension and refurbishment to enhance the existing Science Department. Ridge was appointed to provide services through to completion. Our experience and specialist expertise of working closely with the LSC was a key factor in our appointment. Our role included assisting the School and Project Manager with high level, strategic accountability which monitored construction costs, fees and equipment budgets within the parameters of the LSC benchmarks. In realising the School’s aim of providing additional vocational and academic courses for 16-19 year olds, the new building and its benefits are fully appreciated from within where innovative technology and cost effective solutions clearly offer a stimulating and uplifting learning environment in which to study. A double-height glass fronted lobby is an impressive entrance and provides the best example of the feeling of light and space that has been created and echoed throughout. A bold colour scheme of rich cherry red and vibrant lime green is accented perfectly by crisp white walls and sleek contemporary lines. The vast multi-functional Auditorium acts as the hub of the new facility and boasts a spring loaded dance floor, retractable seating for up to 150 people, a professional lighting and sound system complete with state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and projection screen. The new facility makes provision for wider community opportunities, providing access to facilities not currently available in the area. Local businesses will benefit from the use of conference and training facilities, internet café and wireless network where up to 100 delegates can be accommodated in flexible space/break-out rooms. The design conveys the creative, forward looking ethos that Huish Episcopy provides to their students and against a stringent budget, has incorporated sustainable materials and ambient energy in a manner which will serve well all those who will use the facility. |
