John Cabot Academy, Bristol

The spaces in this new building for John Cabot Academy in Bristol are not conventional classrooms. Formerly a City Technology College the Academy has developed an innovative "learning to learn" curriculum for year seven. This curriculum has led to the development of "new" spaces to support new ways of learning and teaching.

The building is separated from the main school and provides for the year seven children, digital media and arts, a fitness suite and a dance studio. The learning and teaching areas surround a double height presentation space. Lead lessons are held in large open plan areas with moveable projection screens, and smaller break out rooms are provided for small groups and for individual activities or tutorials. The arrangement and connection of these areas are designed to support a personalised learning approach which challenges some existing methodologies and contributes to the development of the school's innovative approach.

The building is naturally ventilated and provides stable comfort conditions by way of a thermal mass structure with ground source heat pumps which drive heating and cooling. It is clad in European oak and roofed in sedum and has a distinctive north light which enhances the relationship between the existing school and the new addition.
