Rock Village Hall, Gloucestershire

Having secured Lottery funding for a new village hall to replace the dilapidated structure, the villagers secured additional funding from other agencies whose stipulations were environmentally and eco-friendly. The final building is consequently a flagship that demonstrates best practice in sustainable construction.

The new timber framed building, partly two-storey, accommodates a 130m² hall, smaller rooms for meetings and functions, a fully equipped kitchen, a bar and changing rooms. There is a mile (1400m) of pipe work for the ground source energy system required which, fanned out away from the building, funnels through a single pipe to the heat exchanger; a challenge lay in finding enough land for enough trenches, consequently there is a complex network of pipes under the sports pitches and car parking area.

Sustainability features include:

  • Use of recycled aggregates.
  • Rainwater harvesting for use in the lavatories, which have a reed-bed filtration system.
  • Ground source energy systems for space heating and hot water supply.
  • Timber from Forestry Stewardship Council sources for boarding and external walls and shingles to roof covering, structural timber frame and other timber products.
  • Powder-coated aluminium windows, external doors, and rainwater gutter and down pipe systems.
  • Recycled plastics in underground drainage pipe work.
  • Recycled cellulose paper in external wall insulation.
  • Hemp and recycled cotton batts for roofing insulation.
  • Recycled wood fibre insulation boards for roofing.
  • Water-based internal paints.
  • Excavated material arising retained on site.
