Student’s Medical Centre, Oxford Brookes UniversityAs part of a large re-organisation exercise of its main campus in Headington, the Client wished to relocate the Medical Centre facility from the tired 1950’s Darcy Building (on the Gypsy Lane site) to an area on the ground floor of the Helena Kennedy Building (at the neighbouring Headington Hill site). The Medical Centre provides healthcare services to staff and students across the University. The Client and St Bartholomew’s Medical Centre (who run the facility on behalf of the University) required four consulting rooms, along with staff areas, admin offices and a meeting room, to be created within an existing teaching area which originally housed student lecture rooms. New dedicated access was required into the Medical Centre to avoid using the existing stairwell that serves the first floor teaching space. This teaching space accommodates lecture rooms, it was therefore a requirement to minimise disruption to these areas throughout the works. Ridge split the works into two phases with demolition and strip out works being carried out over the Christmas break, this allowed disruptive works to be carried out outside of term time. The refurbishment works were then simultaneously tendered whilst the demolition works were being completed. Ridge created a design that provided spacious clinical areas and provided high quality staff facilities. The public areas were created to be light and welcoming. To overcome restrictive low ceiling heights, a recessed light feature was created over the waiting area to increase the feeling of space. |
