Sectors and Projects

St Nicolas Place,
Kings Norton

This project, supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage and the Restoration Fund, is famous as the winner of the BBC’s Restoration television series.

The project involved two Grade II listed buildings, the Tudor House (Saracen’s Head) and the Old Grammar School. The buildings are either side of the Grade I Listed, 12th Century St Nicholas Church and churchyard, and make the largest complex of medieval buildings in Birmingham.

The Old Grammar School, which is nationally significant, is to be used with the Saracen’s Head as a heritage educational and visitor facility for all ages. The scheme was developed into a mixed-use centre; together, the buildings provide a learning centre, a café and meeting/function spaces. Ridge was involved in putting together the original proposal for the television presentation and since the competition Ridge was retained as consultant.

Ridge co-ordinated the project from inception to hand-over, implementing various structured control procedures and completing the approval documents necessary to successfully deliver the Heritage Lottery Fund Stage 2 grant application.

Ridge was at the heart of evaluating Optional Appraisals, developing suitable cost models, providing budget costs for the agreed option, cost planning the proposed restoration and implementing construction phase cost control procedures.

In addition to the traditional Quantity Surveying role Ridge also agreed eligible cost items with Funders and facilitated the monthly draw downs of eligible funds from HLF and Heritage Lottery bodies
