Great North Museum, Newcastle

The Great North Museum which is managed by Tyne & Wear Museums on behalf of our Client, Newcastle University, features two venues, the Great North Museum Hancock and the Hatton Gallery.

The Grade II listed Hancock Museum, closed its doors to the public in April 2006, to undergo a transformation into a world-class visitors attraction as part of the £26million Great North Museum project – refurbishment and extension.

When the new museum opens in 2009, it will be a flagship visitor attraction incorporating collections from the Hancock Museum and Newcastle University’s Museum of Antiquities, the Shefton Museum and the Hatton Gallery.

In order to deliver the scheme, Ridge was briefed to compile and tender the scheme based upon a traditional contract comprising Bills of Quantities. The traditional form of contract allowed the Client to maintain a degree of control over the design and the facility to vary works post contract if the need arose.

Ridge provided cost advice and guidance on the various funding arrangements, together with advice and necessary calculations for obtaining a minimum BREEAM Rating of “Good” which was a requirement of the ERDF funding.

As part of the refurbishment a separate enabling works contract was procured to prepare the museum for the Main Contract Works. The Main Contract works comprised the refurbishment of the existing Grade II listed Hancock Museum building and the construction of a new contemporary designed extension. A separate Fitting-out Contract was then procured to install permanent exhibitions and displays.
