Egg Hatchery, Scunthorpe

Following a fire which demolished most of the building, the hatchery required a rebuild in a short a time as possible within reasonable financial constraints. Having been recommended by the Loss Adjusters, Ridge was called on site within 48 hours of the fire to access the damage and plan the way forward.

Initially the building had to be made safe and secure. Following decontamination, the building was stripped out of any salvageable plant. Ridge recommended the Contractor and Sub-Contractor packages, co-ordinating the design with the specialist process plant company.

The Client also took the opportunity to upgrade the facility; consequently two accounts ran concurrently: 1) for the rebuild and 2) for the refurbishment. Ridge had to satisfy the Client by ensuring the building was operational as soon as possible, simultaneously satisfying the Loss Adjusters that Works were in line with the brief.

The existing M&E Services had to be replaced. Replacement Setter and Hatcher Cabinets required more enhanced services than the original units, so more comprehensive plant for heating, cooling and ventilation were required. The new plant would not fit the existing building footprint so a prefabricated boilerhouse was located externally together with additional chiller plant. The existing plant room now encompasses a mezzanine floor to take the additional ventilation plant and associated services.

The new building services provide a highly controlled environment in all areas, comprising ventilation ductwork, chilled water, lphw heating, hot and cold water, compressed air and treated water services.

The electrical services for the building were also totally renewed. The utility supply was upgraded and the standby generator system was enhanced. A new main distribution panel was installed for the site and new services extended throughout the building to serve the various areas, process plant and machinery. This comprises new sub mains distribution to local distribution boards, for small power and lighting. New lighting was installed to all areas to include energy saving devices such as PIR’s.

All control wiring including the infra structure was installed for the environmental and process controls. Other services include CCTV, Security, Access Control and Fire Alarm.
