Pathology Department, Southmead Hospital, BristolAs a result of the new PFI hospital being constructed on the existing site, a number of the Pathology Departments from both Southmead and Frenchay Hospitals required temporary re-housing. It was considered beneficial for them to be co-located in a single building. The building identified was the recently vacated National Blood Services building. This building had the advantage of existing laboratories. The Client’s brief was to complete the works within a short timescale for a minimum budget, as this was a short-term solution. The scope of works underwent many derivations from the original design during the pre-contract phase our approach was to endeavour to meet as many of these requirements as possible, satisfying a number of requests without compromising the main objectives. Extensive Value Engineering was required to ensure the scope of works remained within the restricted budget. Prior to the Contractor being able to start on site, the entire building (including all services) had to undergo a full decontamination to ensure that there were no biological materials remaining. Within the laboratories that were refurbished there was a CAT 2 laboratory, a CAT 3 laboratory and other sealed environments. |
