Cornbow Shopping CentreThe Cornbow Shopping Centre is the main landmark building that people see as they approach Halesowen town centre. The centre was originally opened in 1967 and for almost 40 years it has provided local people with much of their day-to-day shopping. Both the multi-store car park and the exterior of the centre needed updating. This project required a complex Compulsory Purchase Order process which took some 15 months to run its course. During this time key enabling projects were carried out with our project Partners Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC) and Centro (Bus Station operators). These enabling works involved the diversion of many of the town’s main services, the temporary closure of the bus station and the construction of an underground extension. The main road carriageway through Halesowen was converted to a one way system as part of the plan to allow good access during the project. Once the main project commenced it was necessary to carry out the careful demolition of the existing buildings around the main power supply for Halesowen. During the main construction phases the project was organised to allow the construction of Asda within the multi-storey car park and the bus station alongside each other. This allowed Centro’s contractor to work on the new bus station and allowed the synchronised completion of both projects. The JCT design and build contract was organised with Sectional completion at 4 key stages to meet both construction requirements and legal obligations to Asda, (Vale (Retail) Ltd’s tenant). This also allowed time to discharge our S278 & S106 obligations to our other Partners at DMBC. Our main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland were also a project Partner and were brought on board very early in the planning process. This was a cornerstone for the success of the project. |
