T1 to T5 baggage handling tunnel, HeathrowThis project involved the design development and complete costing of a baggage handling tunnel link including interface buildings between Terminals 1 to 5 at London Heathrow. Services included tunnel ventilation, drainage, hydrant protection, electrical distribution, lighting, CCTV and security, steel work and all necessary fire breaks, fire dampers and fire curtains with all works to be carried out “air side”. Overall the project comprises approximately 1.8km of tunnel which will carry automated baggage trolleys at a rate of 800m per minute between the Terminal buildings and will enable the airport to handle 110 million bags annually. The tunnel is part of an extensive baggage improvement plan and will coincide with work to replace the baggage system at T3, along with the refurbishment of the existing system at Terminals 1 and 4. The new tunnel will link Terminals 1, 5 and 3 with existing underpasses to connect all five Terminals. Working with the contractor, Ridge developed the outline engineering proposals and provided detailed cost and procurement advice up to financial close. In addition to the services associated with the tunnel, Ridge assisted in developing solutions and advising on costs associated with the steel gantries running the full length of the tunnel as well as the operation and interaction of the numerous automatic fire bulkheads. As well as the challenging interfaces mentioned above, particular logistical issues needed to be recognised such as the movement of materials above and below ground in a live airport environment from point of delivery to the work face. |
