Rockingham Motor Speedway

Rockingham Motor Speedway is the first purpose built motor racing circuit to be built in the UK since Brooklands in 1907. Ridge were commissioned to master plan and design the circuit facilities and buildings at a new former quarry site in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Our approach was built upon the success of the design principles established during the design and construction of the new British Racing Drivers Clubhouse at Silverstone completed the year before. The circuit would be designed for spectators with maximum views over the circuit and facilities and ease of access and egress, availability of hospitality and welfare.

The American Speedway model provided the precedent for the design and planning of the main arrangement of the grandstands and main Rockingham building; a 270m long four storey structure with lower level concourse, two levels of hospitality and 9000 roof top seats overlooking the entire one and a half mile oval.

Two horns of 10,000 capacity uncovered aluminium seating structures at turns one and four provide unsurpassed viewing of a motor racing circuit. The simple master plan arrangement with levels of parking, trade and spectator facilities on the outfield in zoned approaches establishes clear divisions between spectators, competitors and administration.

The buildings are designed as a family of structures with a strong and bold colour scheme and architectural style which is unmistakeably Rockingham. Shortlisted in five categories including the Best UK Major Leisure Project at the Building Design Awards it was another first for a motor racing venue.
