Winner - RICS South West, Community Benefit Award 2009
This award looks for outstanding achievements in providing community facilities for a single or group of buildings.
In this category judges have sought to identify evidence of positive local community feedback, improvements to local landscape/ streetscape and high levels of public access to the scheme.
Knowle West Media Centre were winners of the RICS South West section and thus were shortlisted for the Grand Final of the national awards in the summer of 2009.
The new 2-storey fully sustainable building comprises numerous media rooms, a presentation theatre, a dark room with editing suites, office space, an ‘atrium’ cafeteria and presentation space. The Glulam timber frame construction has straw bale walls with external rendering.
The roof design has a central valley profile, and is covered with single-ply membrane, which will harvest rainwater to be recycled through a filtration system to the toilets. The ventilation is natural with Velux roof lights providing natural daylight and ventilation; Brise Soleil are used to reduce solar gain, and the building has photovoltaic cells, and a solar hot water installation.
