Savill Building, Windsor Great Park

Awards 2006/2007

The most eye-catching addition to Windsor Great Park is the new Savill Building, which was opened in June 2006 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Crown Estate commissioned a modern flagship building, which incorporated traditional craftsmanship and materials to be sympathetic with the surrounding parkland landscape. This landmark development was overseen by Ridge as Project Managers.

The undulating leaf-shaped building was constructed as a single cell space oversailed with a timber gridshell roof. It has a three-domed shape, with a tubular steel ringbeam running around the perimeter, supported by steel bi-pod legs. The roof is constructed with four interlocking larch lath layers, based on a regular one-metre grid. It was built using over 20 kilometres of timber, felled from sustainable forests on the Crown Estate. Above the larch grid, the thickly insulated aluminium standing seam roof system serves as a waterproof shell and support for the oak rain screen cladding.

On the entrance elevation (pictured above) the gridshell is supported by an earth structure, housing ancillary service spaces that have been designed to be concealed by a green roof planted with Juniper bushes. On the garden side, a full height, curved, glazed curtain wall provides spectacular uninterrupted views across The Savill Garden.
