Birmingham improves city connectivity with tram extension
04.5.2016

Birmingham has a 20-year vision for the continuing transformation of the city into a world-class urban centre. Ridge, working closely with Centro, is managing an extension to the city’s tram system, a critical part of the Plan.

Birmingham is looking to improve the city’s connectivity with the existing Midland Metro tram system being extended through the heart of the city centre, from the existing terminus at Snow Hill, through to New Street Station. The project includes an additional 1.4km of track and four new tram stops with associated overhead line, utility diversions, traffic signalling and new high quality public realm.

The project has seen trams return to the streets of Birmingham for the first time in over 60 years and represents an important first step in ambitious expansion plans for Midland Metro in the West Midlands.

Ridge is the project manager extension and has also managed the delivery of the associated Tram Depot expansion to accommodate the new tram fleet. Our staff members are working as an integral element within the Client team. We have led the project from initial funding and planning stages, through procurement, a two-stage tender and into delivery. Ridge is carrying out the work through consultancy CRE8, which it acquired last year.
