In July, Mat Kier, a Technician from based in our Winchester office, took on the Mongolian Rally Challenge along with 2 friends. This is a 15,000km road trip starting in Brussels and ending in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
The rally embarked across mountains, desert and steppe of Europe and Asia each summer and on average, the event takes place over 5 weeks or so. There is no back up and no support and no set route for contestants. It is encouraged for those taking part to get lost, break down but most of all, enjoy their travels as they go.
What were the rules of the Mongol Rally?
- Cars must have an engine size of less than 1 (ish) litres (and motorbikes less than 125cc)
- There is no support form ‘The Adventurists’. You are totally on your own
- Your team must aim to raise at least £1,000 for charity.
About The Team
Mat Kier’s team car was called The Ulaan Boulder Mobile and he was joined by team mates Jon and Sam. The Ulaan Boulder Mobile is a 1.1L 1994 Rover Metro and it’s a tad rusty in places! Unfortunately, they couldn’t afford the car they really wanted, a Toyota Hijet. Scouring the web, Mat finally found the Metro and paid a mere £75 for it.
The team managed to raise over £2,500 as part of Ridge’s Challenge70 campaign this year where each office is in a bid to aim at least £70,000 for local and national charities.
