Conservation Studio, Oxford

A new studio for the conservation of rare manuscripts and architectural drawings belonging to a consortia of Oxford Colleges has been inserted in between the grade 1 listed wall to Magdalen's deer park on one of the busiest transport routes in central Oxford.

The building has been designed to turn its back on the street and face the deer park wall where it receives its light and clean air. The building is clad in fumed oak under a single pitch lead roof hidden behind a coursed limestone wall in the tradition of secret Oxford hideaways.

This simple functional building achieves some of the design ambitions which we aim for. It is clearly legible in its structure and material, it is authentic, simply conceived, functional and practical, made of materials which will age well and offers a delight to daily use.
