Paediatrics Assessment Unit, Weston Area Health Trust

Weston Area Health Trust, having identified the need for a specialist paediatrics unit within the Weston hospital site, opted to convert internal office space into clinical space to accommodate the facility. This reflected a planned programme of moving administrative activities outside of the main hospital buildings.

The new facility, a day-case unit, comprises 6 examination rooms, treatment area, 4-cot ward, 6-bed recovery/isolation ward, play space and kitchen.

The logistics and risks that a “building site” presents in a hospital and the need to work round the existing services and stations required careful planning. Disruption was minimised by forming a temporary opening through an existing external wall to provide access for the building team.
