Bowood Hotel and Spa, Wiltshire

Bowood Hotel Projects Ridge & Partners LLP

The Marquis of Lansdowne wished to create a hotel and spa facility within 2,000 acres of parkland shaped by the famous eighteenth century landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. The project involved developing Bowood House and Golf Resort, the ancestral home and gardens in Wiltshire of the Ninth Marquis of Lansdowne.

The client required a five-star hotel with 43 en-suite bedrooms and six grand suites. In addition, a spa would feature a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, gymnasium, squash bar and café. The majority of the rooms were to have balconies and a view of the golf course. The hotel would also offer a fine dining restaurant, bar, reading room, library and morning room.

The interior design was influenced by the wife of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Lady Shelburne. Meanwhile, the extensive landscaping and grounds, including stone walling and water features, were developed by the client’s own design team.

Ridge was appointed to ensure the client’s aspirations were delivered in full by the design team and the contractor. The project was challenging due to the requirement to open the hotel in time for Easter as well as the need to co-ordinate the works let under the formal contract with the extensive works undertaken by the client’s own staff and craftsmen.

The project was delivered on time, however, and Ridge subsequently received two letters of commendation from Lord Lansdowne for our dedication to delivering a five-star project on programme.
