Redevelopment of Woking Fire Station

Redevelopment Of Woking Fire Station - Projects - Ridge & Partners LLP

Woking Fire Station is to be relocated to make way for a large redevelopment scheme in the town centre. Ridge is ensuring that new £9.5 million facility created for the fire station meets the client’s requirement for a high quality, attractive and modern facility, designed to result in improved response times.

Above the new fire station there will be four floors of managed affordable housing. In addition, the fire station will have a sophisticated on-site training centre . This will feature a four-storey galvanised steel framed training house, marked-out road junctions to simulate traffic accidents, artificial ditches and a surface water attenuation tank.

The layout of the fire station has been designed to speed up the fire station’s response times. For example, our experts have designed the two-storey high fire engine appliance bay as a column-free clear span. Large span Vierendeel trusses support the accommodation levels over the appliance bay and the structure is steel framed composite, clad in masonry with some render.

To accommodate the substantial loads from the six-storey building and to protect an adjacent deep public sewer, piling was necessary. Our solution involves partly piled foundations for the main building and a superstructure designed with movement joints between it and the rear single-storey section of the building, which has traditional foundations.

Although the Client did not require Building Information Modelling, Ridge is using BIM in-house to support service efficiency.

The client is the developer of the Victoria Square proposal, BSDL, which is a joint venture between Moyallen, owners of the Peacocks Shopping Centre, Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council.
