Straw Bale Café, Hereford College of Technology

Straw Bale Café, Hereford College of Technology - Projects - Ridge & Partners LLP

This low-environmental impact café for the Holme Lacy campus of Hereford College of Technology makes use of materials grown on site by the college. Ridge value-engineered the project to ensure that it was delivered within a very tight budget while successfully achieving an outstanding level of technical innovation.

The café’s numerous sustainability innovations include the use of straw bale wall panels, made with straw produced by the college. These provide a high level of insulation, within a timber frame. Some of the external walls are clad in timber supplied from the woodlands owned by the college and which was cut by the college itself. The external wall facing the main road is a living green wall containing a substrate that allows either for direct pocket planting or for plants to be trailed up the wall.  Again, the sedum was grown by the college. Further green measures include a wind turbine and photovoltaic panels, which reduce the level of electricity used by the college.

In all, the scheme successfully provides a sustainable café which gives a good visual impression when approaching the campus. Ridge ensured that this cutting-edge, attractive building was delivered for just £250,000.

The scheme’s multiple awards include the LABC National Building Excellence award for Best Technical Innovation. Most recently the cafe was awarded the silver medal in the 2014 Green Apple Built Environment Awards, a national campaign by The Green Organisation to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils and communities.
