UK Ambassador’s Residence, Moscow

UK Ambassador's Residance Moscow - Projects - Ridge & Partners- LLP

Ridge advised on the £10 million refurbishment of the UK ambassador’s residence in Moscow. The late 19th Century Kharitonenko mansion is of historical importance and boasts a beautifully-crafted ornate interior, which had to be preserved while updating the building’s services and improving the use of space.

The Ridge solution made maximum use of the building’s thermal mass for heating and cooling requirements, re-engineering the original passive heat exchangers in basement chambers connected by vertical masonry shafts rising through the building and discharging into the upper spaces. By re-using these shafts, this intelligent solution minimised the impact on existing decorations and finishes, which could be conserved or restored with care.

Air conditioning units were designed to fit in the existing chambers with cooling coils and slow running fans to circulate the air around the system, offering cool or warm cycles using the buildings’ mass via a re-circulating loop. This approach also helped to minimise the environmental impact of the scheme.

The success of the design was achieved through the Ridge team’s lateral thinking and coordination across disciplines. In this way we arrived at solutions that maximised the use of the existing systems and thermal mass of the building, whilst conserving and limiting the impact on its fabric.

The refurbishment contract was undertaken by a contractor with previous experience of historic building restoration in Moscow. This helped to achieve a particularly high standard of quality in the building’s interior. For example, the timber finishes within the many ‘fine’ rooms benefited from significant attention, including temporary removal of components to enable restoration in a specialist workshop.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office faced significant challenges with local planning and historic monuments requirements. Ridge supported the client throughout by assisting with permissions and authorisations for each element of the works and by maintaining a permanent on-site presence.

As the works progressed, sourcing highly skilled artisans was another challenge. However, close co-ordination between Ridge, the client and project management team, both on site and in the UK, ensured the work was completed successfully.
