Redevelopment of existing wards at The Priory, the BMI hospital in Edgbaston, to provide new cancer treatment centre, MRI/ CT imaging suite and modern communal facilities.
BMI Healthcare is the UK’s largest private hospital group with 59 hospitals and clinics throughout the UK. It treats over 1,500,000 outpatients and admits 276,000 inpatients each year. Ridge is currently appointed on a BMI Healthcare framework supplying project management and cost management services across the Client’s hospital portfolio.
Ridge was appointed at early concept stage to provide management of the design team and main contractor throughout the process. The key challenge was the tight timescale in conjunction with an operation hospital and budget restraints.
Being a healthcare project, it required multiple stakeholder management at each stage. There were also end-user requirements to be taken into account, and each decision impacted on other aspects of the scheme.
Private hospital group
There are several consultants on the design framework. Ridge worked closely with these consultants to progress through concept design and into detail design.
At an early stage, Ridge ascertained that a phased option would maximise the delivery of the scheme, allowing for a simultaneous delivery of the ground and first floors. This enabled the hospital to occupy the new Cancer Centre without impacting on the daily operation of the wards.
The imaging suite offered particular challenges as two scanners were installed by turn-key providers (Toshiba & Philips). This necessitated sympathetic consideration of surrounding facilities, paying particular attention to magnets, X-Ray and radiation.
