Hilton Garden Inn Airport Hotel Birmingham Airport
The construction of a 9-storey Hilton Garden Inn Hotel on Concorde Way at Birmingham Airport, using modular construction techniques.
Ridge was appointed to provide civil and structural engineering services and also worked with the main contractor during the construction stage.
Ridge designed the steel-framed first floor transfer deck that supports the modular construction and the full-height stair cores at either end of the building, along with the roof slab over the modules to support plant. Tight tolerances were required for the construction of the first floor to provide a platform for the modules, which involved careful detailing of the junction.
Ridge also designed the augured piled foundations and the below-ground drainage and associated access roads.
The development saw the delivery of a 9-storey hotel, featuring 178 guestrooms and was constructed using a modular construction, which enabled components of the new hotel (including guestrooms and corridors) to be manufactured in China and transported to the site for final assembly. The modular system is employed from the first floor up, as the ground floor consists of a variety of spaces including restaurant, meeting rooms and back-of-house areas.
