Friday September 12th saw the inaugural Ridge cycling Sportive take place with a number of  groups setting off from Henley on Thames and taking in the challenges of the Chilterns. Over 50 cyclists attended and were split between off road, social, medium and fast groups – something for all abilities!

The day began around 11 with a light lunch and briefing. There was also the added option of a free bike service from AW Cycles and for the off roaders the option to demo one of the ‘Bird’ Bikes, all before groups went their separate ways and began their route around the hills including Watlington Hill and Kingston Blount.

The distance the groups cycled ranged from a social thirty miles, an off-road adventure, to a three hour super fast distance of sixty miles!

Each group had a Ridge leader to direct and a refuel point made halfway at Stokenchurch where riders had a chance to catch their breath, embrace a sugar hit and grab some fresh water before heading off for the challenging second half.

As well as beautiful scenery we were in the right place at the right time as the Tour of Britain passed along Christmas Common, near Watlington, en route to Hemel Hempstead (stage 6). The tour opted to go down Kingston Blount – we took on the challenge of going up it!

When everyone returned back to Henley Rugby Club, there were free sports massages available and a BBQ so everyone soon tucked into their food and beer and discussed speedy descents (a shade under 50mph!), the Tour, the challenging climbs and the occasional wrong turn.

Overall the event was a great success and we hope to run the event again next year! Until then you have plenty of time to train and feel free to look through our Facebook photos which show all the highlights from the day!
